[About the work]

The Winter Lotus series comprises a body of work that observes the cycles of nature and the essence of time.

It is themed around the time and regeneration of nature.
Printed by the artist himself on Hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper.

Nam has explored "the passage of time" through landscapes. In this series, he captures withered lotuses in winter, quietly highlighting the difference between human time and natural time.

A lotus covered in snow may at first glance appear to be a scene of death. However, this appearance also signifies a period of preparation for the next regeneration.
Nam depicts the latent power of life within decay and stillness through a restrained expression of light.

This series was photographed during the global standstill of the 2021 pandemic. While human society experienced chaos and disruption, nature continued its unchanging cycles.

The winter lotus is a metaphor for "natural time" that progresses even in the midst of a standstill.
It is also an attempt to record the time of life quietly accumulating at the bottom of despair.

All works are printed by the artist himself on Hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper. Images deeply permeated into the fibers of Hanji convey the silence of winter and the layers of time more physically.
