[About the work in The Things series]
A series of flower and vase works by photographer Jonghyun Nam.
Lush pink magnolia buds, heralding spring, are arranged in a pure white Korean traditional ceramic Moon Jar.
All works are printed by the artist himself on Hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper.
Images deeply embedded in the fibers of Hanji carry traces of time, creating a unique expression that blurs the lines between photography and painting.
Jonghyun Nam quietly observes the time and memories residing in familiar "things."
He is particularly drawn to old objects that have endured for many years, seeking to perceive the traces of human hands etched upon them, and the echoes of life's joys and sorrows.
When the artist encounters a "thing," he listens to its story, takes it to his studio, and spends a long time contemplating it. He presses the shutter the moment he feels he has fully conversed with it.
The captured images are printed by the artist himself on Hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper with a breathing texture. Within the warmth of the paper and the expansive blank space, the "thing" quietly begins to tell of its existence.
