[Artist's Statement for The Chair Series]
My work with chairs began with a personal attachment to them.
Once, when I met a chair collector to photograph his collection, he asked me, "Why do you photograph chairs? Are they props for photography, or something else?"
I answered:
"Just as people have ID photos, I believe chairs can have portraits that show the essence of their existence."
For me, a chair is not just a piece of furniture; it is an entity that has absorbed human time. It quietly holds traces of body warmth, memories, and life. Chairs also possess their own inherent charm and beauty.
I see chairs not as functional objects, but as entities, and I want to present their unique atmosphere and presence through photography.
This work is not about recording the shape of a chair, but an attempt to gaze at the portrait of an "object" that has lived through time with people.
A swan gracefully swimming on the water: 'The Swan Chair.'
This chair is "The Swan Chair," designed by Danish designer Arne Jacobsen.
It is said to have been inspired by the elegant form of a swan swimming gracefully in a river.
Looking at this chair, I can imagine a scene where swans quietly float in a lobby. When I actually sat in it, I felt a natural, enveloping comfort.
I wanted to capture the elegance of its flowing curves and its warm vitality in this single photograph.
I hope that by tracing these lines, you too can feel a gentle sense of peace.
The captured images are printed by the artist themselves on Hanji, traditional Korean handmade paper with a breathable texture. Amidst the warmth of the paper and the expansive blank space, the "object" quietly begins to tell of its existence.
