[Artist's Statement for The Chair Series]

My work on chairs began with a personal attachment to them.
Once, when I met a chair collector to photograph his collection, he asked me, "Why do you photograph chairs? Are they props for your photography, or something else?"

I replied:
"Just as people have ID photos, I believe chairs can also have portraits that show the essence of their existence."

To me, a chair is not just furniture; it's something that has absorbed human time. It quietly holds body warmth, memories, and traces of life. Chairs, too, possess their own inherent charm and beauty.

I aim to capture chairs not as functional objects, but as beings, and to convey their unique atmosphere and presence through photography.
This work is not about documenting the shape of a chair, but an attempt to gaze upon the portrait of an "object" that has lived through time with people.

[About the Ant Chair]

This chair was named "Ant Chair" because its silhouette resembles the shape of an ant's body.

It was designed by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1952. In Japan, it is sometimes affectionately translated as "Arinko Chair."
The artist himself prints the photographed images on Hanji, a traditional Korean handmade paper with a breathing texture.
Mr. Nam captures the chair head-on, and amidst the warmth of the paper and the expansive blank space, the chair's form comes into focus and quietly begins to tell its story.
