Modern Ruin - Mine
Kouzo Takeuchi
2024
Materials: earthenware clay, Ōya stone
74 × 38 × 18 cm
Contemporary ceramic artist Kouzou Takeuchi has gained attention both in Japan and abroad for his outstanding handmade techniques and delicate sensibility.
The work gives the refreshing impression of towering mountain scenery. This series is made by molding clay into a sheet using the Tatara technique. The clay feels rustic, and the surface is sanded before firing to give it a rough texture. Ōya stone is cut into geometric shapes and constructed to nestle with two ceramic parts. The work feels like a challenge, overlapping with the history of Ōya stone used as a furnace stone for pit houses in the Jomon period.
