CENTRAL PARK — Art Print

This woodblock print is based on SMP GALLERY’s first collection of art rugs, “CENTRAL PARK”※.

Photographed from the original rug, the work captures the texture and tonal qualities of wool, along with the interplay of light and shadow, translated into varying shades of sumi ink.

※ “CENTRAL PARK” was inspired by the lush natural landscape of Central Park, an oasis of nature in the heart of the city.

Based on a monochrome digital photograph by Taka Matsuura, capturing a fleeting moment of sunlight filtering through the deep green trees of Central Park, the image was carved and printed by woodblock artist Katsutoshi Yuasa.

The resulting work was then transformed into an art rug by YAMAGATA DANTSU (Oriental Carpet), using its traditional hand-tufted technique, in which each element is carefully and individually worked by hand.

[About the Artist]

Born in Tokyo, Japan.

1978 Graduated from Musashino Art University, Department of Oil Painting (Printmaking Course)

1979 Royal College of Art, London, UK

1980 Completed Master's Degree in Printmaking

He has held numerous solo exhibitions in England, Germany, China, and other countries and has exhibited at numerous art fairs worldwide. In recent years, he has held the "Monet: 100 Years Since" exhibition at the Nagoya City Art Museum and the Yokohama Museum of Art, a major solo exhibition at the Franz Gertsch Museum in Switzerland in 2022, and an exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, this year, His work has been widely exhibited around the world.
