[The BARBIE Series]
The BARBIE series is a collection of works that quietly observe dreams, memories, and the emotions we project onto objects through the iconic figure of Barbie.
[About the work] Artist's words
The BARBIE series began to commemorate Barbie's 60th anniversary.
Strongly drawn to Barbie's slogan, "YOU CAN BE ANYTHING!", I started this series by reflecting on the dreams I had as a child and the possibilities that still reside within me as an adult.
Starting with a chance encounter with a collector's Barbie doll collection, I view Barbie not merely as a toy but as an entity onto which dreams and memories are projected.
In this series, chairs are used as a significant motif.
Miniature chairs, made to the same scale as Barbie, are arranged like a stage, creating a scene of a story within a small world.
The photographs are produced as archival pigment prints on traditional Korean Hanji paper.
Hanji, with its breathable fiber texture, imbues the image with a soft warmth and a sense of life.
This series is less about photographing the doll itself and more a quiet record of time, memories, and the emotions we imbue in objects.
In the frame, Barbie stands as a figure reflecting our individual dreams and the passage of time.
This work combines a miniature "Chaise Lounge" chair, designed by Mies van der Rohe, a leading architect of 20th-century modernism, with an affection for Barbie.
